How well does a 5 ton log splitter work? ›

If you're going to be splitting a small amount of shorter, softer woods, then a 5-ton will do you nicely. If you're slightly more serious, and I suspect if you're reading this then you are, then dismiss that 5-ton thought from your mind because you're gonna want something a little more hardcore.

If you mainly split soft, straight-grain, or dry, seasoned wood, 22-ton to 28 tons of power will suffice. If slow-burning hardwood will be in your wood stove this winter, then how many tons of force your log splitter can produce is much more of a factor.

A lot of manufacturers will advise that you should change your fluid after every 50 hours. However, if the fluid used is of high quality this will usually give you around 150 hours of log splitting operation.

If you really need to take one of these hundreds of miles away, we recommend putting them in the back of your truck or on a trailer or just take the slow, scenic route. Towing a splitter is pretty straightforward.

If you notice any dull areas, chips or nicks in the hydraulic log splitter blade, sharpen it with a coarse metal file. Use the file to smooth down the sides of the blade to reform the sharp point. Then, run a fine metal file along the edge of the blade to finish the process.
